Build & improve · WordPress development

WordPress development that's easy to edit and safe to update.

Custom and block themes, editor patterns, plugin customisation the WordPress way, and integrations with the tools you use, built to stay fast and maintainable long after launch.

WordPress development, done to last

In short

WordPress development is building and extending WordPress sites properly: custom or block themes, editor blocks and patterns, plugin customisation and integrations, written so the site stays fast, editable and safe to update for years.

WordPress makes it easy to get something working. It also makes it easy to build something that’s fragile: a premium theme with forty bundled plugins, edits made directly inside a plugin that are wiped by the next update, a page builder layout nobody can change without breaking it. Our job is to give you the flexibility without the fragility.

Theme approaches compared

ApproachBest forTrade-offs
Custom block themeSites that should be fast, consistent and easy to edit long termHigher upfront design and build effort
Child theme of a solid parentCustomising a well-maintained theme without losing updatesLimited by the parent theme’s structure
Page builder (Elementor, Divi and similar)Teams who want visual drag-and-drop editingHeavier pages; layouts can be fragile; harder to migrate away
Premium marketplace themeQuick starts on small budgetsOften bloated with features you don’t use; quality varies

We work with all of these, including taking over and improving existing builder sites. For new builds, we usually recommend a custom block theme with reusable patterns, because it gives you safe editing with the least weight.

Block editor development

The WordPress block editor (Gutenberg) lets you build pages from blocks. We create custom blocks and patterns (pre-designed, reusable sections such as a service highlight, a pricing table or a testimonial layout) that match your brand. Editors pick a pattern, change the words and images, and the layout stays consistent.

We also lock down what shouldn’t be changed: colour palettes limited to brand colours, font sizes from your type scale, and templates that keep headers and footers consistent.

Plugin customisation without forking

Editing a plugin’s files directly is the most common cause of “the update broke everything”: updates overwrite the changes, so the site either never gets updated or loses its customisations. We customise behaviour the way WordPress intends, through hooks, filters, child themes and small companion plugins, so the original plugin can keep updating.

When a plugin can’t do what you need, we’ll tell you whether a different plugin, a small custom plugin, or a change in approach is the better route.

Integrations

CRMs and email marketing

Forms that send leads and subscribers to the tools your team already uses.

Bookings and scheduling

Booking systems connected to calendars, with confirmation emails that actually arrive.

APIs and custom data

Pulling in or sending data to third-party services through their APIs, securely.

Analytics and tracking

Analytics and conversion tracking set up with respect for consent and page speed.

Fast by design

A performance budget from the start

Speed is cheapest to build in and most expensive to bolt on. Every project starts with a budget for page weight and scripts, and each plugin, font and third-party script has to justify its place against it. We optimise images on upload, load scripts only on the pages that need them, and avoid layout shifts by reserving space for images and embeds.

The result is measured with lab tests before launch and with real-visitor Core Web Vitals afterwards. See speed optimization for how we measure.

Code standards and handover

How a WordPress project runs

01

Review or brief

For existing sites, a review of the theme, plugins and code; for new work, a brief of what editors need to do.

02

Plan the build

Which parts become templates, blocks and patterns, which plugins are justified, and what’s custom.

03

Build on staging

Developed in version control and deployed to a staging site you can review.

04

Test

Editing experience, front end on real devices, accessibility basics, performance and compatibility with your plugins.

05

Deploy and document

Released at a quiet time, with notes on how everything fits together.

An example project

Illustrative scenario

Replacing a fragile builder layout with editable patterns

A marketing team edits their services pages in a page builder, and every edit risks breaking the layout on mobile. Pages are heavy and slow.

The service page layout is rebuilt as a set of block patterns (hero, benefits, process, FAQ, call to action) styled to match the brand. Editors now assemble pages from patterns and change text and images freely without touching spacing or columns. The builder is removed from those templates, cutting page weight noticeably, and the team receives a short editing guide.

Composite example to explain the process. Not a specific client.
