What a business website needs to do

In short

Website development is planning, designing and building a website that explains what you do clearly, helps the right customers contact or buy from you, loads quickly on phones, can be found in search, and that you can update yourself without breaking it.

Most business websites have one job: turn a visitor who’s comparing options into an enquiry or a sale. Looking good matters, but it’s in service of that job. A site that’s beautiful but slow, confusing on a phone, invisible in search or impossible to edit without calling a developer is an expensive brochure.

We plan the structure and content first, then design and build around it, so the finished site works for visitors, search engines and the person who has to update it on a Tuesday afternoon.

Signs it's time for a new website

One or two of these may only need improvements, not a new site. See the next section.

New build, redesign, or improve what you have?

Improve

Keep the site, fix what's holding it back
  • Structure and platform are sound
  • Problems are speed, content or a few templates
  • Lowest cost and risk

Redesign

Same platform, new design and structure
  • Content is mostly good, presentation isn’t
  • Navigation and pages need reorganising
  • URLs can often be kept

New build

Start fresh
  • Platform is outdated or limiting
  • Business has changed significantly
  • Technical debt makes changes slow and risky

We’ll recommend the least disruptive option that solves the problem. Rebuilding a site that only needed better content and faster hosting isn’t good value.

What a build includes

Discovery and structure

Who the site is for, what they need to find, and a page structure that reflects how customers choose you.

Content plan

What each page needs to say, with help writing or improving copy where you need it.

Design

A visual system (typography, colour, components) applied consistently, designed mobile-first.

Development

A clean, editable WordPress build with only the plugins it needs.

SEO foundations

Titles, descriptions, headings, structured data, sitemaps, redirects and fast pages from day one.

Training and handover

How to edit pages and posts safely, plus written notes on how the site is put together.

Plan the pages first

Structure before decoration

A clear site structure: home linking to services, about, guides and contact, each with its own child pages
Structure that mirrors how customers choose you

The best-looking design can’t rescue a confusing structure. Before any design work, we map the pages: one clear page per service, a path from every page to an enquiry, guides that answer real questions, and nothing hidden three clicks deep. That structure also does a lot of the work for search engines, because each page has one clear purpose.

Which platform, and why

For most service businesses we recommend WordPress: it’s flexible, widely supported, easy to edit, and you’re never locked into one developer or company. For online stores, WooCommerce adds full ecommerce on the same platform.

We’ll tell you if something else fits better. A business that only sells a handful of products and wants zero technical responsibility may be happier on a hosted platform; a very simple site might not need a CMS at all. The right answer depends on who will edit the site, what it needs to do in three years, and your budget for looking after it.

Whatever we build, you own it: the code, the content, the domain and the hosting accounts, in your business’s name.

How a build runs

01

Discovery

A call and a short questionnaire: your customers, competitors, goals, and what isn’t working today.

02

Structure and content plan

Sitemap, page outlines and the key messages for each page, agreed before design starts.

03

Design

Key templates designed mobile-first; you review real layouts with real content, not lorem ipsum.

04

Build on staging

Developed on a private staging site you can review as it takes shape.

05

Content and QA

Content added; testing across devices and browsers, forms, accessibility checks and performance.

06

Launch

Redirects from any old URLs, analytics and Search Console set up, then go live at a quiet time.

07

Aftercare

A period of fixes and adjustments after launch, then optional maintenance.

Standards we build to

What you'll need to provide

Content, or time to review it

Service details, team information, photos, case material. We can help write and edit.

Brand assets

Logo files, colours and fonts if you have them, or approval of a new direction.

Decisions

One person who can approve structure, design and launch, so the project keeps moving.

Domain and hosting access

For launch day, or we’ll help you choose hosting.

Timeline and what may cost extra

Timelines depend mostly on the number of page templates, how much content needs writing, special features, and how quickly decisions are made. You’ll get a timeline with milestones in the written scope.

Things that are usually quoted separately: professional photography, extensive copywriting, translations, premium plugin licences, complex integrations (CRMs, booking systems, ERPs), and migrating large amounts of existing content.

An example project

Illustrative scenario

A consultancy replacing an outdated site

A consultancy’s site was built on a theme that’s no longer updated. Services are described on one long page, there’s no clear way to enquire, and the team can’t edit it without breaking layouts.

Discovery identifies five core services and the questions prospects ask before getting in touch. The new structure gives each service its own page with a clear enquiry path, plus guides answering common questions. The design is built with the block editor, so the team can add case notes and guides themselves. Old URLs are redirected, Search Console and analytics are connected, and the team gets a one-hour training session and written editing notes.

Composite example to explain the process. Not a specific client.
